Aiming for a return to global prominence after the disappointment of last summer, the U.S. women’s national team is 90 minutes away from a spot in the gold-medal match as they meet Germany in the semifinals of the 2024 Olympics on Tuesday.
Having romped through the group stage with ease, with a dominant 4-1 win over Germany included in the mix, the USWNT started the knockout stage with a much tougher challenge. Only Trinity Rodman’s extra-time heroics saw the United States past Japan 1-0 in the quarterfinals, giving them a strong shot at a medal.
Germany have been strong aside from the group-stage slip against the USA, but needed penalties to slide past Canada in the quarterfinals. After a scoreless draw, goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger made two saves in the shootout before depositing the decisive penalty herself.
The winner of this match will take on the victor from the other semifinal, as Brazil meet reigning Women’s World Cup champions Spain.
