West Ham United are set to complete the signing of U.S. women’s national team midfielder Kristie Mewis from Gotham FC.
The 32-year-old, who was part of the U.S. roster at the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, is expected to become West Ham’s first signing of the January transfer window. An official announcement is expected later this week.
Mewis was the first pick in the 2021 NWSL expansion draft for the San Diego Wave, before quickly getting traded to Gotham for $200,000 (£158,852) in allocation money. She was a bright spot in a grim 2022 for Gotham when the team finished in last place with only four wins during the season.
Her time was more limited in 2023 due to the World Cup and a lower leg injury but made her return in time to provide the assist on Katie Stengel’s goal that sent Gotham to the final. Mewis made 14 appearances as Gotham won the 2023 NWSL Championships.
Mewis’ move to the WSL also frees up roster space for Gotham, especially with reports that the NWSL club’s free agent targets include midfielders Rose Lavelle, Emily Sonnett and Crystal Dunn. Last month, Mewis and Chelsea goalscorer Sam Kerr announced their engagement. The two were discussing potential apartments in London to share during a recent interview with Esquire.
