Kansas City Current and USWNT midfielder Sam Mewis underwent knee surgery last week and will be out for an undefined period of time, she announced on social media. Here’s what we know:
- The Current originally acquired Mewis in November 2021 in a trade with the NC Courage in exchange for Kiki Pickett and the Current’s 2022 college draft first-round pick.
- Mewis’ leg injury predates her arrival to Kansas City; she had arthroscopic surgery on her right knee in August 2021 after the Olympics but was only able to play a couple of Challenge Cup games in March 2022 before the injury forced her to out.
- Mewis was ultimately placed on the season-ending injury list in August 2022.
- The Courage turned that 2022 draft pick into No. 3 selection Emily Gray, who played 176 minutes for the Courage in 2022.
- Mewis helped the Courage win NWSL titles in 2018 and 2019 and was an integral member of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup champions. The 30-year-old has made 83 appearances for the USWNT, scoring 24 goals with 10 assists.
