The U.S. women’s national team will face the toughest test of its group stage schedule as the 2023 Women’s World Cup favorites meet 9th-ranked Netherlands in a battle for control of Group E.
It’s a rematch of the 2019 Women’s World Cup final, and the first time in this competition’s history where the previous tournament’s final is replayed four years later in the group stage.
For the Dutch, many holdovers remain from the team that came so close to glory in France four years ago, but for the USWNT, there has been significant turnover as manager Vlatko Andonovski has ushered in a new generation of world-class talent.
Both sides picked up three points in their group stage opener last week, but they both slightly underperformed from an attacking perspective, and this game will provide a solid barometer of where they stand among the best in the world as they each look ahead to a potential knockout stage spot.
