The USWNT will playoff against Japan for the SheBelievesCup after defeating Australia 2-1 at State Farm Stadium on Sunday.
A first minute strike to Lynn Biyendolo and debut goal for Michelle Cooper sealed the deal for the USA, who withstood a late fightback from the Matildas after Michelle Heyman’s header.
It was an experimental team for the USA, with 11 changes following the 2-0 win against Colombia, but that didn’t stop the hosts from dominating most of the match.
After scoring before the first minute expires, Biyendolo was unlucky not to have at least a hat-trick as an abject Australian defence continually presented her with opportunities.
With both teams on six points, the USA will need to beat Japan on Wednesday to win the SheBelievesCup, with the Japanese having a superior goal difference if the game is tied.
