The USA women’s national soccer team will take the field for the final time before the 2023 Women’s World Cup roster is named as players have a final chance to prove they belong in a pre-tournament friendly against the Republic of Ireland in St. Louis.
The USWNT topped Ireland 2-0 back on Saturday, but lost prolific and in-form forward Mallory Swanson to a serious knee injury in the process, a devastating blow to the team on and off the field. It will now be up to manager Vlatko Andonovski to figure out how to replace the team’s 2023 leading scorer, with a combination of forwards likely to be given a chance.
Alyssa Thompson, just 18 years old, could be one of those options, as she was called in to replace Swanson. She will play in this match in some capacity, as Andonovski himself confirmed.
The 22nd-ranked Republic of Ireland are also preparing for the World Cup, their first-ever appearance at the women’s tournament.
