Stars-and-stripes jerseys are on the line as many of the nation’s top riders gather in West Virginia this week for the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships.
Charleston is the place to be for eight days of racing, including time trials and road races for para-cyclists and able-bodied junior, under-23 and elite men and women.
Defending national champion and Paris Olympics road race gold medalist Kristen Faulkner of Alaska leads the field for the women’s elite race along with Nicole Steinmetz of California. Both raced in the Vuelta España Femenina earlier this month. Past champions Emma Langley (2022) and Lauren Stephens (2021) also return with an eye on another victory.
Quinn Simmons is the headliner in the men’s elite road race field. The 24-year-old won the event two years ago. Fellow Coloradan Riley Sheehan, who completed La Vuelta last fall, could also be a contender. Noah Streif of Idaho, who just turned 19, posted top-five finishes in the junior road race and time trial last year and is a rising star to watch.
