US Open: American players outnumber other nations in singles draws

Date:

The 2023 US Open singles fields feature 43 American players — 24 women and 19 men. The United States led all nations in the number of main-draw singles participants this season at all four Grand Slams.

Having 24 American women in the singles draw is the most at the US Open since 25 in 2004, if we exclude the COVID-affected year 2020 when 32 ladies competed. No.3 Jessica Pegula is the highest-seeded American woman this time, followed by No.6 Coco Gauff, and No.17 Madison Keys. The draw also features Venus Williams, the champion at the 2000 and 2001 US Open, as well as Sloane Stephens, who clinched the title in 2017.

When it comes to American men, out of them 19, five are seeded, which is the highest number at the US Open since 2004: No.9 Taylor Fritz, No.10 Frances Tiafoe, No.14 Tommy Paul, No.28 Christopher Eubanks, and No.31 Sebastian Korda.

The US Open main draw begins on Monday, August 28. Grammy Award winner Sara Bareilles will join icon Billie Jean King in headlining an opening night celebration, as the tournament pays homage to the 50th anniversary of equal prize money with a special tribute before and during the evening session matches in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
