Unseeded Azarenka and Haddad Maia stun top seeds to claim Madrid Open doubles title

Playing their first tournament together, unseeded Victoria Azarenka and Beatriz Haddad Maia won the 2023 Mutua Madrid Open doubles title by beating top seeds Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula 6-1 6-4 in Sunday’s final.

The new doubles team pulled off a stellar week in Madrid, as they upset No.3 seeds and Stuttgart champions Desirae Krawczyk and Demis Schuurs in their opening round, and went to beat Anna Kalinskaya/Caty McNally, Paula Badosa/Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Leylah Fernandez/Taylor Townsend, and finally Coco Gauff/Jessica Pegula who have already clinched two titles this season (Doha and Miami).

The 2023 Madrid Open is Azarenka’s tenth doubles title and fifth at a WTA 1000 tournament. Her Brazilian partner has clinched her biggest career title and fifth in doubles.
