UK government backs Karen Carney’s independent review for improving standards in women’s football

The UK government has endorsed the recommendations presented by Karen Carney to help improve the standards of women’s domestic football.

Represented by culture secretary Lucy Frazer, the government has accepted the recommendations and called for the Football Association (FA) and wider stakeholders “to go further and set a new standard for women’s sport”.

Commissioned in the wake of England’s 2022 European Championship success, Carney’s independent review — which was published in July 2023 — articulated a series of strategic recommendations aimed at leveraging the recent triumphs of the women’s national team. The objective is to chart a course toward a prosperous and sustainable commercial future for women’s football in the UK.

Carney’s review called for a steadfast commitment from the FA and NewCo — the company which is set to take over the running of the women’s professional game from the 2024-25 season — to fully professionalise the Women’s Super League (WSL) and Women’s Championship. This is reinforced by proposals to elevate minimum operating standards, enhance physical and mental health provisions, establish elite training facilities and fortify support structures for players transitioning out of the sport.
