UConn star guard Azzi Fudd will miss the rest of the 2023-24 season after suffering a medial meniscal tear and an ACL tear in her right knee, the school announced Wednesday. Here’s what you need to know:
- Fudd sustained the injury in practice on Nov. 14 and will have surgery at a later date.
- The junior missed the Huskies’ last two games — wins against Maryland and Minnesota — with what UConn called a non-contact injury. Coach Geno Auriemma said last week that doctors were waiting for the swelling in Fudd’s knee to go down before doing tests.
- Fudd averaged 11.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in two games this season.
How big of a loss is this for UConn?
It’s significant. As a freshman, she averaged 12 points per game and during her sophomore season she upped it to 15 a game. A big reason why this team had a potential Final Four ceiling was because of her playmaking, experience and shooting ability, especially in tandem with guard (and her best friend) Paige Bueckers.
