UConn’s Aubrey Griffin tears ACL, becomes fourth Huskies player ruled out for season with injury

UConn graduate forward Aubrey Griffin will miss the remainder of the season after suffering an ACL tear in her left knee, the school announced Wednesday.

Griffin suffered the injury during No. 13 UConn’s 94-50 win over No. 22 Creighton on Jan. 3. Griffin is now the fourth Huskies player to be ruled out for the year due to injury.

Freshman forward Jana El Alfy tore her Achilles tendon during the summer, star guard Azzi Fudd tore her ACL and meniscus in November, and forward Ayanna Patterson underwent season-ending knee surgery in December. Additionally, junior guard Caroline Ducharme played in four games at the beginning of the season, but has since been out indefinitely with head/neck spasms.

Griffin had started five games for UConn this season, averaging 9.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. She started a career-high 30 games for the Huskies in 2022-23 and had been ranked No. 19 on The Athletic’s 2024 WNBA Draft big board last spring.

“Aubrey’s had to overcome a lot. She had one of these (injuries in high school),” coach Geno Auriemma said Wednesday. “She missed a year at UConn when she needed back surgery. You’re just heartbroken for the kid when it’s their last year and something like this happens.”
