UConn and South Carolina each roar into Sunday’s national championship game, as the stage is set for a showdown between two blue bloods.
The second-seeded Huskies dispatched of No. 1 seed UCLA in the Final Four, rolling to an 85-51 victory. Paige Bueckers continued her sensational tournament with a 16-point performance, though her stretch of three consecutive games with 30+ points did come to a close.
Now, Geno Auriemma has UConn on the doorstep of its first national championship since 2016. The eight-year title drought is the program’s longest since 1995, when they won their first championship.
South Carolina certainly looked the part of a domineering No. 1 seed when it handled No. 1 seed Texas on Friday night, coasting to a 74-57 victory. Te-Hina Paopao led the way with 14 points, drilling three 3-pointers to pace the Gamecocks’ offense.
Dawn Staley has her team eyeing its third national title in the past four years. The last team to achieve that feat was UConn, which won four consecutive titles from 2013-16.
