There’s absolutely nothing better than overtime in an elimination hockey game.
That’s where the United States and Canada found themselves on Sunday night in the IIHF Women’s World Championship gold medal game.
The two powerhouses were tied 3-3 after regulation, with the U.S. seeking its second world title in three years.
The U.S. had scored twice within 29 seconds in the second period to take a 2-0 lead. Canada answered back with two rapid-fire goals of its own to tie it 2-2.
A 5-on-3 power play in the third period put the United States back ahead, but then Canada tied it with 5:48 remaining in regulation.
In overtime, the United States took advantage of a Canada error.
Taylor Heise stole a failed zone clearance, and Tessa Janecke slid to the doorstep on the left side of the goal.
Heise’s feed was to the stick and quickly into the net, and the party was on for the United States.
