Tottenham’s Evaliina Summanen banned over ‘successful deception’ of referee during Ella Toone clash

Tottenham Hotspur Women’s Evaliina Summanen has been banned for two games for the “successful deception of a match official”.

Summanen, 24, was involved in an incident in a Women’s Super League match against Manchester United on February 12, which saw Ella Toone sent off.

Toone challenged Summanen in the 79th minute of the match, with the United forward reacting by pushing the Finland international while she was on the ground.

But Summanen then clutched her face and Toone was subsequently shown a straight red card by referee Amy Fearn.

There is no VAR in the WSL, meaning Fearn’s decision stood, despite it appearing that Summanen had not been struck in the face.

Last Thursday, Toone’s red card and three-match ban were overturned by the Football Association (FA) following United’s appeal.

The FA also then confirmed that Summanen was facing a charge of attempting to deceive the match officials.

The charge has now been upheld, despite the midfielder’s denial, and Summanen will miss Spurs’ upcoming games against Reading in the FA Cup and against Manchester City in the WSL.
