Top moments 2018: Gilmore equals Beachley’s record – The Women’s Game

The 30-year-old equals surfing legend Layne Beachley’s record set in 2006, her last World Title before retiring two years later.

Gilmore clinched the title after American Lakey Peterson, who was the only other athlete mathematically able to win the title, made an early exit.

The Murwillumbah born surfer was just a teenager when she lifted her first championship in 2007 before going on to snatch three more consecutive titles in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Unfortunately, on December 27, 2010, her life changed when outside her home in Tweed Heads she was assaulted by a man with a pipe which left her with a fractured ulna and a severe wound to her head.

The incident put a record fifth World title on hold. 

Gilmore added two more world titles in 2012 and 2014 before a serious knee injury in 2015 again halted her success.
