Top moments 2018: Cate Campbell returns – The Women’s Game

Campbell took a break from competitive swimming to rediscover her love for the sport after the 2016 Rio Olympics didn’t go to plan.

She finished in sixth place in the 100m freestyle before placing fifth in the 50m freestyle just days later.

At the time she told reporters it was “possibly the greatest choke in Olympic history”. 

While she did return to the pool at the 2017 Australian Short Course Championships and broke the world record in the 100m freestyle, it was at the Commonwealth Games in April that she made her return to international swimming.

The 26-year-old picked up three gold medals and one silver on the Gold Coast before collecting five gold medals at the Pan Pacific Championships in Tokyo.

At the Pan Pacs, Campbell swam faster than any woman has ever swum in a 100m freestyle with a split of 50.93, which was 0.07 second quicker than her split in the world record breaking 4x100m freestyle relay at the Commonwealth Games in April.

The 100m freestyle World Record is currently held by Swedish swimmer Sarah Sjöström with a time of 51.71.
