Australian marathon runner Erchana Murray-Bartlett is no stranger to running long distances. An accomplished runner, she had her sights set on the Tokyo 2022 Olympics. After missing out on qualifying, she decided to focus on a new challenge. Her goal was to run from the tip of mainland Australia (Cape York) to the toe (Melbourne). In doing so, she has completed an astonishing total distance of 6,200 kilometres. The distance is equal to 155 marathons every day, setting a new World Record. The previous World Record for most consecutive daily marathons by a woman was 106. British runner Kate Jayden set this record in 2022.
Tip to Toe 2022 – a wild run for wildlife
The mission for the Tip to Toe challenge was not only to set a new world record, but to raise awareness for extinction in Australia. The country’s biodiversity is incredibly unique, yet it is second in the world for biodiversity loss. In fact, there are now almost 500 Australian animals on the endangered list. Sadly, this includes some of the most iconic like koalas. Erchana had a fundraising target of A$62,000 – $10 for every kilometre.
