Thorns fire trainer Pierre Soubrier after NWSL investigation finds he administered codeine to players

The Portland Thorns have fired trainer Pierre Soubrier, and he is suspended from the NWSL through the 2023 season, after a league investigation found he administered a medication containing codeine to two players without a prescription. Soubrier’s status was made public as part of a series of findings related to Portland and the Washington Spirit released by the NWSL on Tuesday.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Soubrier was fired after Portland’s physician, Dr. Breanne Brown, reported that Soubrier told her he gave two players a medication that contained codeine, a controlled substance, at the Thorns’ semifinal game on Oct. 22. Codeine requires a prescription and should only be administered by a physician.
  • Brown also self-reported “concerns about her own conduct related to the administration of controlled substances” and will be “subject to increased oversight by and regular reporting to the NWSL Chief Medical Officer” for three months, at which point the officer will provide an assessment to commissioner Jessica Berman.
  • Separately, Thorns assistant coach Sophie Clough was fired and the NWSL suspended her without pay through the 2023 season after an investigation substantiated claims of unwanted physical contact with a player.
