Thompson: A toast to Bob Myers, who rose from fan to fixture in Warriors’ lore

SAN FRANCISCO — When it was over, when the goodbyes and thank yous were said after a dozen years of service, Bob Myers did as his wife suggested. He and Kristen went and got a drink together.

Raise a glass to freedom.

A toast to the Bay Area’s own, a kid from Danville who used to get tickets to Warriors games on his birthday, who was enamored with Larry Smith and was most certainly ridiculed for loving the Warriors, who served as an apt conductor of a dynasty. He leaves knowing he wasn’t just there for the rise of the Warriors, but his DNA is all over a decade for the ages. So much so, Tuesday’s announcement that he was stepping down feels like the end of an era. Not the end of winning, as Joe Lacob declared. But the end of what was. It was special.

Things can’t just roll along the same when a pillar such as Myers is removed. The same is obviously true for Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson and Steve Kerr. It’s most certainly true without The Governor and his relentless demand for success. But on a franchise with several all-time greats, with such giant personalities and massive stakes, the Monte Vista Mustang somehow proved to be invaluable.
