This WSL season wasn’t a classic – it’s time to make the league more exciting

It was a final-day performance that summed up Chelsea’s dominance of the 2024-25 Women’s Super League. First-year coach Sonia Bompastor’s title winners defeated visitors Liverpool 1-0 thanks to Aggie Beever-Jones’ stoppage-time goal, but it was a game largely without interest or excitement, in what has been a very dull WSL campaign overall.

The atmosphere suggested fans were at Stamford Bridge to see the trophy lift as much as the game; this was Chelsea’s sixth league title in a row, but the first time they had been wrapped up the championship before the last day of the campaign, and the first time they had been presented with the trophy at the club’s 40,000-capacity main stadium.

Chelsea have reached a level of dominance where they are no longer competing with the other 11 sides in this season’s WSL, but with their own previous achievements.

Beever-Jones’ goal on Saturday meant Chelsea surpassed their previous WSL record of 58 points for a 22-game league season, set two years ago, with a new high of 60. They have also gone through the 22 matches undefeated (W19, D3), and will now attempt to complete a fourth domestic double in five years on Sunday against holders Manchester United in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
