The 5 biggest storylines for the 2024 NCAA women’s basketball tournament

As we get close to the madness, here are five big storylines in women’s college basketball you need to have on your radar for the NCAA tournament.

No. 1 — Will defending champion LSU repeat?

The Tigers won their first title in program history in only the second season of the Kim Mulkey era. As one of the winningest coaches in NCAA women’s college basketball history, Mulkey had the blueprint of how to bring a title to the home state, securing the No. 1 transfer in the country: Angel Reese, who would eventually become the most outstanding player of the 2023 NCAA tournament.

Fast forward to the 2023-24 season, and Mulkey went to the transfer portal again, this time doubling her stuff by bringing on the top two transfers in the country in Aneesah Morrow and Hailey Van Lith. Many claimed, including myself, that this super team had a clear path to reclaim their throne as champs, but the Tigers have hit a few bumps in the road.

This squad still needed at times learn how to play with each other’s end game chemistry, but the talent is undeniable. Despite a few losses, what matters the most is what goes down in March. LSU could win it all again — and the Tigers have the pieces to do it. But South Carolina might have something to say about that.
