Texas Tech’s NiJaree Canady snuffs Texas comeback attempt to even WCWS

OKLAHOMA CITY — Maybe there is something in the air at this Women’s College World Series causing close and wild games.

But on Thursday, the last remnants hanging in the wind were the “Guns Up” hand gestures of Texas Tech fans.

With Texas knocking in the top of the seventh, climbing back from a 4-1 hole to bring the game within a score, all eyes were on Canady — including Texas Tech alumnus Patrick Mahomes and his wife Brittany on their feet, leaning over the table in anticipation and the comfort of their second-story booth — with two outs.

The junior ace delivered three straight rise balls on the outside corner to strike out Kayden Henry and ice the game in a bounce-back performance in Game 2. Texas Tech’s win evens the title chase with Texas at a game apiece, setting the stage for the winner-take-all Game 3 on Friday at 8 p.m. ET

Cue the “NiJa Stomp.”

In Game 1, Reese Atwood won it for Texas with a two-run single after swinging gutsily during what was supposed to be an intentional walk. It was a series of pitches Canady called a “mistake,” saying Wednesday “that loss is on me.”
