The Battle For The Chancellor’s Spurs might be a blood — and football — feud, but it’s found quite the home on the diamond, particularly during this year’s Women’s College World Series final.
The championship series pits a pair of Lone Star State-based programs against one another, with No. 12 Texas Tech set to joust against No. 6 Texas.
The matchup is notable for a number of reasons. For one, the Red Raiders and Longhorns used to belong to the same conference, the Big 12. They have quite a (mostly one-sided) history with one another — Texas has a 61-12 record against Texas Tech, claiming each of their past 12 matchups.
Yet, all that feels insignificant in the present. This Red Raiders side is far from ordinary, laying claim to a number of gifted talents, chief among them their animated arbalest, NiJaree Canady. A two-time NFCA National Pitcher of the Year, Canady came to Lubbock hoping to collect a decent check and lift Texas Tech to the upper echelons of the sport.
So far, so good. Canady posted a 32-5 record, surrendering just a 0.86 ERA and collecting 296 strikeouts thus far. More vitally, her team is in college softball’s grandest stage, having defending champions (and then some) to do so.
