Love blossoms in the world of tennis as Mirjam Bjorklund and Denis Shapovalov delighted fans by announcing their engagement on social media with a series of black-and-white photos taken in the enchanting backdrop of Bastad, Sweden.
The WTA world No.132 from Sweden and the ATP world No.23 from Canada started their relationship in 2019. Over the years, their bond grew stronger, and they recently celebrated their four-year anniversary during Wimbledon.
In a fairy-tale-like proposal, Denis Shapovalov asked for Mirjam Bjorklund’s hand in marriage during her recent visit to her home country, where she played the WTA 125 Nordea Open last week. Although she faced disappointment by losing in the second round, the romantic moment left her on cloud nine. The heartfelt scenes were beautifully captured by photographer Kate Gabor, and the couple couldn’t wait to share their joyous news with the world via social media.
Shapovalov’s relationship with Bjorklund made him become aware of the gender pay gap and all the difficulties women’s tennis players face. In March, the former ATP No.10 and Wimbledon semifinalist wrote a touching letter in support of equal prize money, which was featured in The Players’ Tribune.
