In what should be a highly entertaining matchup, the Tennessee Lady Vols take on the Green Bay Phoenix in the opening round of the 2024 women’s March Madness tournament this Saturday (noon ET, ESPN).

Tennessee earned a 6-seed in the tourney after a 19-12 season in the stacked SEC, and the Vols came as close as a team can get to a conference title without winning it. USC’s Kamilla Cardoso took and made her first three-pointer of the season to sink UT 74-73 stunningly.

That loss will be fresh in Tennessee’s minds entering the tournament, where a win this weekend would advance Kellie Harper’s Vols to the second round against the winner of the NC State-Chattanooga matchup. Harper previously coached NC State, so a second-round matchup with the Wolfpack would provide plenty of storylines.

Green Bay has enjoyed a stellar season, capped off by a three-game winning streak that saw the Phoenix take down the Horizon League’s top-seeded Cleveland State Vikings for the conference championship. This seems like the little mid-major engine that could, but beating a perennial powerhouse like Tennessee will be a tall order.
