Tara VanDerveer, winningest coach in college basketball history, announces retirement

Date:

Tara VanDerveer, the winningest coach in college basketball history with 1,216 victories, announced her retirement Tuesday. VanDerveer earned the title of the winningest coach with her 1,203th victory this past season, which passed former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski’s total of 1,202.

VanDerveer was a head coach for a combined 45 years at Idaho (1978-80), Ohio State (1980-85) and Stanford (1985-95, 1996-2024). She led Stanford to three NCAA championships (1990, 1992 and 2021) and 14 Final Four appearances in 38 seasons leading the Cardinals.

Stanford is in negotiations with Kate Paye, who played under VanDerveer from 1991-95 and has been on her staff for 17 seasons, to become the new head coach, the school said in VanDerveer’s retirement news release.
