Three members of the University of Wyoming swimming and diving team died in a car crash Thursday afternoon in northern Colorado, the school said.

Charlie Clark, Carson Muir and Luke Slabber were killed in the single-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 287, about 10 miles south of the Wyoming-Colorado border.

Clark, 19, was a sophomore on the men’s team from Las Vegas, and Slabber, 21, was a junior from Cape Town, South Africa. Muir, 18, was a freshman on the women’s team from Birmingham, Ala.

Two passengers, a 20-year-old and 21-year-old member of Wyoming’s men’s swimming and diving team, survived. They sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to a report from the Colorado State Patrol.

“We are heartsick at the news of this terrible tragedy for our university, our state, our student-athlete community and, most importantly, the families and friends of these young people,” Wyoming president Ed Seidel said in a statement. “Words are insufficient to express our sadness.”

The Colorado State Patrol and local emergency services responded to the crash at 2:44 p.m. local time, per the report. The car, a Toyota RAV4, was carrying five passengers southbound. It drove off the left shoulder of the road and rolled multiple times, ejecting two people.
