CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  The Virginia women’s tennis team opens the fall portion of its schedule by competing at the Kitty Harrison Invitational at the Chewning Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Cavaliers will compete against players from North Carolina, Duke, Old Dominion, Florida, Purdue, Charlotte and Penn State.

Each day of the event will include action beginning at both 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Virginia players will be in the 1:30 slot all three days.

In each time slot, doubles will kick off play, followed by singles. Weather permitting, matches will occur simultaneously on 12 outdoor courts, along with additional matches on the Cone-Kenfield indoor courts at the Chewning Tennis Center.

The tournament is held in honor of Kitty Harrison, the longtime head coach of the Carolina women’s tennis team from 1976 to 1998. Eight of Harrison’s 22 teams were ranked among the top 25 nationally and, under her direction, Carolina won four ACC championships in a row from 1977 to 1980 and finished as the league runner-up four other times. Harrison retired after the 1997-98 season as the winningest tennis coach in ACC history.

Admission is free all weekend.

Daily recaps will be posted to this page.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s tennis team announced the fall portion of its 2024-25 schedule.

The Cavaliers will compete as individuals in tournaments from September through November, all leading up to the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, which will be held Nov. 19-24 in Waco, Texas. This is the first year that NCAA titles will be decided in the fall instead of in May at the end of the team championship.

The Cavaliers host a home tournament, the Wahoowa Invitational, at the Virginia Tennis Facility at the Boar’s Head Resort Oct. 4-6. Virginia will also serve as the host for the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships Oct. 17-22.

Much of the fall schedule, including the ITA Atlantic Regional, is geared toward qualifying for the 64-player NCAA Singles field and the 32-team doubles draw.

Ten singles players (eight main draw quarterfinalists and two feed-in consolation finalists) and four doubles teams (main draw semifinalists) will punch their championship tickets at the ITA All-American. The two singles finalists and the doubles champion at each ITA Regional will also earn an invitation. The ITA Sectionals will provide a final opportunity.

The draw for Sectionals will include 32 singles and 16 doubles teams for each of the four ITA sections…

Subhash emerged as one of the two ACC 2024 NCAA Woman of the Year candidates following a vote of the league’s member schools. Jala Wright of Duke softball was the conference’s other nominee.

“The ACC takes great pride in consistently recognizing our student-athletes, and specifically the exceptional women nominated by our member institutions for the prestigious NCAA Woman of the Year Award,” said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, Ph.D. “This year, Natasha and Jala were selected by the membership from an outstanding pool of talented women who embody the highest standards of achievement in collegiate athletics. DANIELLE COLLINS QUOTES (7/29)

On the atmosphere of an Olympic Games

“It’s one of the coolest atmospheres that I’ve played in. I’ve played a lot of Billie Jean King Cup matches. I’ve never played in the Olympics [before], and then one of the things that’s so special about the Olympics is like, you’re walking around here and people aren’t necessarily here for a specific player, but they’re here for the country. I think that’s so special. It was really cool seeing the fan base, you know, that Caro has created over the course of her career, and so many Danish people here to support her, but also so many Americans, too, in the crowd that I’m sure traveled a long, long way to get here. So that really meant a lot. Thinking about COVID, in 2020 and 2021 when we didn’t have a lot of fans, that was a really challenging time for a lot of people, for the fans, for us as athletes. It’s one of the most special things you get to experience as an athlete is being able to have so many people here supporting you. It gives me chills when I get to play in that type of atmosphere. It’s so cool.”

On the experience of playing the Olympics in her farewell year

“I’ve experienced a lot, experienced most things on the tennis tour, and then today I experienced…
