During the season in this space, we often like to begin with a bit of pop culture or history or some other random bit of nonsense unrelated to college basketball. So, uh, is it OK if we just do that for the entirety of this final installment?

Because we’re going to be totally transparent here. For the first time in six years of making mock brackets for The Athletic, we go into Selection Sunday with no earthly idea of what the selection committee is going to do. Oh, sure, there are always small surprises, but for the most part, the field is obvious except for maybe one slot.

Not this year. After one of the wildest Championship Week Saturdays we can remember, which included two power-conference bid thieves and a still-hard-to-believe outcome in the American, we find ourselves utterly confused by the bubble. And whether North Carolina will hold on to that final No. 1 seed or if surging Iowa State will take it. At least we’re not alone:

Pure. Chaos.

Madness came early on Saturday, leaving a trail of stolen bids, burst bubbles and flummoxed bracketologists in its wake. Now? Selection Sunday is here.

We know we have four legit bid thieves: NC State in the ACC, Oregon in the Pac-12 and two more coming Sunday in the A-10 and AAC. Drake’s upset over Indiana State in the MVC title game might end up as a fifth functional bid thief. Wild.

Get your March Madness printable bracket

The bracket reveal is mere hours away. In the meantime, we’ll do our best to calculate the bubble math and take stock of an absolutely wild day of college hoops.

Here’s my best estimation of where things stand entering Sunday:

• There are 32 automatic qualifying bids via conference champions. There are 36 at-large bids. Total of 68.

• At least 21 of those 32 conferences will be one-bid leagues, including the Ivy League championship between Brown and Yale on Sunday. So let’s start with 21.

• Give at least four bids to the ACC: AQ and three at-large locks….

One day before the bracket is revealed, bid thieves are the big storyline. We know we will already have one in the Atlantic 10 with Dayton out of the mix. Three more are lurking between now and the selection show: North Carolina State in the ACC, Oregon in the Pac-12, and anyone other than Florida Atlantic in the AAC. How those shake out will be critical for a bubble that is nearly at capacity.

NCAA Senior Vice President of Basketball Dan Gavitt suggested on Saturday morning that there were “at least another four or five spots” up for grabs as far as at-large bids. That might be overstating it a tad, and will of course depend on how those possible bid thieves shake out, but there are clearly still decisions to be made.

I’ll be making regular, daily updates to Bubble Watch from now until the bracket is revealed, so be sure to bookmark this page and check in all week as conference tourneys heat up and the NCAA Tournament field comes into focus. As soon as relevant games in each conference wrap up, I’ll have fresh thoughts on what it means for those teams and any other bubble watchers impacted by the results.

I’m in Kansas City covering the Big 12 tournament, but I’ll do my best to update things in real-time, and I’ll try to hop into the comments and answer questions as well. Even the mean ones.

An important note: An expanded “Movement” section for each conference will be refreshed as often as necessary, while the corresponding team charts will be updated each morning with accurate records, NET rankings and other metrics.

We’ll keep track of the number of auto-qualifiers as they roll in, whether or not there are any “bid thieves” among them, and how the math is shaping up for the rest…

We are officially less than a week away from Selection Sunday. Let me rephrase that; we are five days away from going from Bracket Watch to actually watching the bracket being built. With this being my first foray into bracket-building and seeding, it means something a bit different to me this year.

In a way, I’ve been building up my own resume and body of work every week, working to tweak what I’m doing, improve my process, and work to be more in line with how the committee seems to be viewing things. We’ve got a wealth of great coverage from The Athletic women’s basketball staff on the way, including ramping up to daily Bracket Watch articles through Sunday.

If this is your first edition, welcome! This is a great time to get in, as the cement is starting to set at the top although the bottom of the bracket is still liquid. Conference tournaments are taking place all week, so be on the lookout for daily games if you’re looking for a hoops fix during your lunch breaks.

The Big 12 championship can still shake up some things. The Summit, Horizon and WCC are each in their final…

The weekend was packed with dramatic conference tournament showdowns.

Some were predictable: South Carolina winning another SEC championship. Caitlin Clark doing Caitlin Clark things to win the Big Ten title. UConn dominating to advance to the Big East finals.

Some were less predictable: Iowa needing a comeback against Nebraska. Georgetown advancing to the Big East finals. USC taking down Stanford for the Pac-12 crown.

But the lasting image, unfortunately for the sport, will be the benches clearing in the South Carolina-LSU game.

Fight late in South Carolina-LSU leads to several ejections

Here’s what else you need to know about the conference tournaments and how teams fared as we inch closer to Selection Sunday:

Don’t bet against the Irish. Here’s why …

Injuries have been a part of so many team’s stories this season, but when it comes to Notre Dame, there aren’t many teams who’ve been hit harder. First, it was Olivia Miles, who sustained a knee injury in last season’s ACC tournament and has missed the entire season. Then, it was Cassandre Prosper, who played only five games this season before suffering a lower leg injury. Then, it was Sonia Citron, who missed weeks in the middle of the season with a knee injury.

When Kylee Waton went down in the ACC…

Bracket Watch HQ is also home to a 5-year-old, who has recently discovered a new favorite song. Which means we’ve been forced to listen to it on an endless Spotify loop:

Yes, for those of you without children or an aversion to cartoons, that’s Reel 2 Real’s relentlessly dumb but inescapably catchy 1993 hit “I Like to Move It,” remade for the “Madagascar” movie franchise. You’re welcome for the earworm.

It also reminds us that things are always changing and growing in unexpected ways. Take the NCAA Tournament, for example (segue alert!). Dana O’Neil reported this week that tournament expansion remains a very likely outcome, but the field would only grow by a modest four to eight teams. Perhaps we’ve reached the acceptance stage of our grief, but we can move forward with a few more play-in games if that’s what it takes to keep the barbarians at the gate.

It’s also time for teams to make their moves in our latest mock bracket, now just nine days from Selection Sunday. Conference tournaments have begun, and the power conferences get going with their postseasons next…
