Manchester City completed a PFA Player of the Year double on Tuesday night as midfielder Phil Foden and striker Bunny Shaw were named men’s and women’s winners for 2023-24.

Foden, 24, scored 19 goals and provided eight assists to help City clinch an unprecedented fourth successive Premier League title under Pep Guardiola.

Erling Haaland — who won last season’s crown — was one of six nominees, including City midfielder Rodri, Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard, Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and Cole Palmer.

Shaw finished the campaign as the top scorer in the Women’s Super League (WSL) with 21 goals in 18 games for the club, despite having her season prematurely ended by a foot injury in late April.

The Jamaica international becomes the first female City player to scoop the award since Lucy Bronze won the accolade in 2016-17.

Shaw’s Man City team-mates Yui Hasegawa and Lauren Hemp were also nominated, alongside Chelsea’s Niamh Charles, Erin Cuthbert and Lauren James.

Having missed out on the evening’s main award, City academy graduate Cole Palmer was crowned the men’s Young Player of the Year after an outstanding debut campaign at…

Angel City have confirmed the signing of former Manchester United captain Katie Zelem on a deal through to 2026.

Zelem, 28, joins after leaving United following the expiration of her contract at the end of June, bringing an end to a chapter that saw her make over 160 appearances for the club.

A product of United’s academy, Zelem initially left in 2013 due to the absence of a senior women’s team, moving on to Liverpool and later Juventus. However, she rejoined United in 2018 when the club re-established its women’s side, quickly becoming a cornerstone of the squad.

Named as captain ahead of United’s debut season in the Women’s Super League, Zelem played a pivotal role in the team’s rise, leading them to promotion in 2019 and their first-ever Champions League qualification in the 2022-23 campaign. She also helped United clinch the FA Cup with a victory at Wembley last season against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Premier League, EFL, FA, and Women’s Super League (WSL) have announced a new code of conduct for gambling-related agreements in football.

The code, which will be implemented at the start of the 2024-25 season, is designed to regulate gambling sponsorships across the professional game, emphasising four key principles: protection, social responsibility, reinvestment, and integrity.

A key aspect of the code is its emphasis on reinvestment. Revenue generated from gambling sponsorships must be redirected into football-related infrastructure and community programmes. This includes improvements to stadiums and training facilities, as well as investments in grassroots football and local community participation.

Under the new code, gambling sponsorships will also be required to target their marketing efforts more carefully to avoid reaching children and individuals at risk of gambling-related harm. Additionally, any gambling-related sponsorship must include educational initiatives and awareness campaigns designed to promote responsible gambling practices.

Manchester United have activated a one-year option on Nikita Parris’ contract to extend her stay at the club until 2025.

The 30-year-old forward’s existing deal had expired in June, with United holding an option to extend it by a year.

Parris was United’s top scorer last season, scoring 16 goals in 30 appearances across all competitions.

Parris, who was part of England’s European Championship-winning squad, joined United from Arsenal in the summer of 2022.

She scored four goals in 21 Women’s Super League appearances during her debut season and became a more central figure in her second term at the club following the departure of forward Alessia Russo, who joined Arsenal.

The Athletic reported Parris had turned down a lucrative offer from National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side North Carolina Courage in April to prioritise the FA Cup final in May, a fixture that United won with a 4-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur to secure their maiden piece of silverware.

An agreement had been reached between the clubs before the April 19 transfer deadline in what would have marked a record women’s sale for United, while Parris stood to earn £1million ($1.29m) over a three-year deal.

However, Parris made clear she did not wish to depart until after the Wembley clash. The Courage…

New Jersey governor Phil Murphy says he “would die” to bring Premier League matches to the United States, explaining that he believes it is in the competition’s “enlightened self-interest” to do so.

Murphy, 66, has been involved in football for several decades, including serving on the board of U.S. Soccer and co-owning the NWSL team NJ/NY Gotham FC.

MetLife Stadium, the 82,500-capacity arena situated in New Jersey, will be the venue for the 2026 World Cup final and hosted a friendly between Manchester United and Arsenal last year, as well as three games — two group fixtures and a semi-final — at the Copa America this summer. Real Madrid and Barcelona will play a Clasico pre-season friendly there on August 3.

Asked whether he envisaged these matches becoming competitive fixtures, Murphy replied: “I would die for that. And by the way, the exhibitions — we will have Real and Barcelona on August 3, we’ll have to shrink our capacity a little bit for FIFA — every ticket was sold and the game didn’t count. I would love to — I would die — to see what happens in a game that counts. It would sell every ticket and then some.”

Leading executives at NBC Sports, the American broadcaster that spent $2.7billion (£2.2bn) on a six-year Premier League deal, have been…

Erik ten Hag believes that Manchester United’s appointments of sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox will help “raise the bar” at Old Trafford.

Ashworth started work at United earlier this month after United finally reached a compensation agreement with Newcastle United after months of negotiations.

The 53-year-old now leads United’s football operations, across men’s, women’s and academy teams, and will report to incoming chief executive Omar Berrada.

Wilcox was appointed from Southampton in April and will work in partnership with Ten Hag and his coaches to implement a game model across the men’s and academy teams as well as recruitment.

“We are so pleased that around the football, around the first-team, we have a strong structure that will help us,” Ten Hag told MUTV.

“They are really supportive and that will help us in many ways, like in scouting and recruitment, like in the departments of medical and performance. They will be so supportive and that will raise the bar.”

Manchester United are considering using St. George’s Park as a temporary training base for their women’s team after the men’s team relocated to the women’s building during renovation work at the club’s main Carrington training base.

The Athletic reported last month that United men’s team will use the women’s first-team building during the 2024-25 season, with the women’s squad asked to use portable cabins. The club have provisionally booked the Football Association’s (FA) facilities from July 29 for a period of two to three weeks should they need them in order to cover the period when temporary facilities are put in place at Carrington.

A final decision to conduct a training camp at St. George’s Park — set in the Staffordshire countryside and owned by the FA, which is used by all of England’s national football teams — is, however, yet to be taken as the club are in consultation with players and evaluating the timescale required to assemble the temporary facilities.

Before this solution was proposed, United’s women squad were invited to a video meeting with the club, led by head of women’s football Matt Johnson, late last month in which the club informed the players of the impact of the redevelopment and their future relocation but not all players…

Avram Glazer, a part owner of Manchester United and a member of the Glazer family who retain a majority stake in the club, has failed in a bid to become the controlling shareholder of NWSL side Angel City.

Sources familiar with the discussions, who would not speak publicly owing to the sensitivity of the talks, confirmed that Glazer had pursued a stake in Angel City.

He has missed out, however, to the Disney CEO Bob Iger and his wife Willow Bay, who are now close to purchasing control of Angel City FC. Semafor first reported news of Glazer’s interest.

Glazer had recently profited after the six Glazer siblings diluted their shareholding equally when they sanctioned the sale of 25 per cent of the club to Sir Jim Ratcliffe over the past year. A filing with the Securities and Exchanges Commission (SEC) confirmed they each sold approximately 4.6 million Class B share and at a trading price of $33 per share, that amounted to $909million in total — or around $152m in each of the Glazer’s pockets.

The Glazers are already the owners of the NFL franchise the Tampa Bay Bucaneers while Avram Glazer also owns the Desert Vipers, a franchise in the International League T20 competition in the United Arab Emirates.

Moelis, the investment bank, were hired to find a controlling investor and…
