Los Angeles Dodgers star Freddie Freeman’s wife, Chelsea, posted on Instagram Sunday afternoon that the couple’s youngest son, Maximus, had been discharged from the hospital after eight days. Chelsea posted earlier this week on social media that the three-year-old Maximus had been diagnosed with a severe case of Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological condition. Maximus’ symptoms have included full-body paralysis, the post said.

“Max still has a long road ahead of him to regain his strength and relearn how to walk,” Chelsea wrote on Sunday. “But we are so thankful to have our family back together.”

According to Mayo Clinic, the syndrome is “a condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the nerves. It can cause weakness, numbness or paralysis.” Chelsea’s post earlier this week said Maximus had been taken off a ventilator on Wednesday. The Freemans believe the issue stemmed from a viral infection Maximus suffered during last month’s All-Star game in Arlington, Texas.

His upturn coincided with manager Dave Roberts saying Sunday afternoon that Freeman could return to the Dodgers as soon as Monday or Tuesday after missing the last eight games. Freeman was transferred Saturday from the family emergency list to the restricted list — a paper…

Maximus, 3, is battling a severe case of Guillan-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological condition. Maximus’ symptoms have included full-body paralysis, the post said. According to Mayo Clinic, the syndrome is “a condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the nerves. It can cause weakness, numbness or paralysis.”

Chelsea Freeman’s post said the child was excavated from his breathing tube and taken off the ventilator on Wednesday afternoon. Maximus remains hospitalized.

“These have been the hardest and scariest days of our lives,” Chelsea wrote. “Maximus is such a special boy and he has been fighting SO hard. This is going to be a journey to recover, but we have faith that he will be completely healed. ”

Freeman, the All-Star first baseman, has been away from the Dodgers since July 26, a day after the family revealed that Maximus had been hospitalized. As Chelsea explained in her most recent post, Maximus’ condition that day “rapidly declined,” spurring Freeman to return to Los Angeles to be with his young son and family.

LOS ANGELES — The biggest unknown surrounding the Los Angeles Dodgers’ fortunes this October returned to Dodger Stadium on Monday afternoon. Walker Buehler played catch in the outfield while former Dodgers pitching coach Rick Honeycutt observed in street clothes, an extra pair of eyes as Buehler looked to rediscover himself after a second Tommy John surgery.

It has been 34 days since Buehler’s return to the major leagues was put on pause. Much of that time has been spent away from the organization, nursing a nagging hip issue and trying to sort himself out at Cressey Sports Performance, a private facility in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

There, Buehler threw, accompanied by his wife McKenzie and their daughter, Finley. He also got away. Though he sent videos of his progress to the organization, much of his past month has been spent behind closed doors.

Buehler’s return from surgery did not go well. Through eight starts over May and June, he had an unwieldy 5.84 ERA. For as much as his stuff appeared to have been restored to his pre-surgery form, Buehler struggled to execute with consistency. Everything felt different than it had during his rehab appearances.

What inspired him to try something different?

“Being s—,” Buehler told The Athletic. “There’s nothing worse…

LOS ANGELES – Little has come easy for the Los Angeles Dodgers for months, largely of their own doing. Generating any tangible momentum has been difficult and fleeting. Kiké Hernández has felt that. His third return to Los Angeles has not been fruitful. He woke up Saturday morning amid the worst offensive season of his career, but he was greeted with an accomplishment: His wife, Mariana, had thrown together a celebration with his friends and family to commemorate the veteran’s 10 years of major-league service.

By night’s end, he was a hero twice over, slugging a tying home run in the ninth inning and stroking a tying single an inning later as the Dodgers rallied to a 7-6 walk-off victory over the Boston Red Sox. The afternoon was frenetic. The Dodgers bullpen twice blew leads. Their closer coughed up a two-run home run. They fumbled a bases-loaded rally on a check-swing double play.

Not much has come easy. For Hernández, it was rewarding nonetheless.

“I’m just really glad that this happened and I was able to come through,” Hernández said. “I haven’t really been able to come through that much this year.”

He struck a reflective tone. Perhaps it was because of the significance of the day and the longevity it means. Or it was an acknowledgment of a season that…

The San Diego School of Baseball was backed by hitting stars such as Tony Gwynn and Alan Trammell, but it was the pitching minds that gave the early 1980s baseball camp its charm — and its legacy.

Brent Strom and Tom House had been teammates at the University of Southern California and then, later, journeyman pitchers in the major leagues. Aside from lineage, they also shared deep-seated hunches that there was more to learn about baseball than previous generations had taught.

So when the day’s instruction was over, they sat in the dugouts of Grossmont College or ventured to a local watering hole, tossing ideas back and forth: the things they loved about the game, the things they thought were wrong, the things they wanted to change.

Once, during a baby shower for another coach’s wife, the men were scolded when they were found in the corner of a room, playing back film of pitchers. They were all obsessives, and the San Diego School of Baseball was their offseason oasis — a place where they could gather and discuss, without judgment and scorn, some of the very concepts that decades later would alter the balance of baseball.

“A summit,” House called it, “of smart baseball minds.”

Before PITCHf/x and Statcast could measure progress, before internet message boards and…

LOS ANGELES — For much of the last two years, Walker Buehler has had to process an outlook on his occupation that did not compute. The Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander had to accept that, with a twice-repaired ligament in his right elbow, there would be growing pains. He would not resemble the man who, at his best, held Dodger Stadium within his palm and forced opposing hitters to bend to his will — at least not right away.

He had to teach himself that patience before preaching it to others. His first two outings back in the major leagues looked every bit like Buehler had not pitched in the big leagues in 23 months. And yet, Buehler spoke about the small victories. Against Miami, he found the velocity he was never fully certain was still there. In San Diego, he warmed up better.

Saturday night, he found another, bigger victory. For the first time in nearly two years, he secured a win in the big leagues, delivering six scoreless innings in a 4-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

All it took was something that resembled growth for the cocky right-hander who dazzled with his brilliance in his youth but now, at 29 and a Tommy John recipient twice over, is finally willing to try something different.

“It sucks so much,” Buehler said with a smirk. “I was telling my wife (McKenzie)…

LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani came bearing gifts on Saturday. He arrived knowing his next home run would be a meaningful one. The “history” at stake was more of the fun-fact variety, but the Los Angeles Dodgers star saw an opportunity.

No Japanese-born player in Dodgers history had more home runs for the franchise than Dave Roberts, Ohtani’s new manager. Roberts, the former speedy outfielder slugged seven long balls in his 1,043 at-bats with Los Angeles. The fact delighted Ohtani so much that as the designated hitter completed his first month with his new club, he’d bring up his pursuit of that mark in conversation. Roberts added to the fun, goading his new superstar and making a quip whenever Ohtani hit one to the warning track this past week. Roberts openly pondered the gifts he’d receive when Ohtani inevitably broke the mark.

“I need a new car,” Roberts said, alluding to the $700 million man’s sponsorship deal with Porsche.

So Ohtani brought him a car, sort of. He was stoic as he strode into his manager’s office before Saturday’s game against the Atlanta Braves and then revealed the gift: a mauve toy Porsche Panamera. It was the same model car that Ohtani had gifted Joe Kelly’s wife, Ashley, back in December for the rights to the No. 17 (though Kelly…

There are many unanswered questions surrounding the betting scandal involving Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani and his interpreter Ippei Mizuhara. What we do know, though, is Mizuhara wasn’t just an interpreter. He was Ohtani’s right-hand man, his catch partner, his liaison for on –and off– the field matters because the most successful interpreter-player relationships are built on one thing: unrelenting trust.

“It’s such a big part (of the job),” Mizuhara told The Athletic last summer of establishing a close connection. “We are together pretty much every day, longer than I’m with my wife, so it’s going to be tough if you don’t get along on a personal level.”

The Mizuhara-Ohtani relationship — the pair worked out together on Christmas – was perhaps extreme, but the role of interpreters in baseball has evolved significantly over the years. Interpreters are in dugouts, team meetings and have carte blanche into the life of a professional baseball team. It’s not impossible to imagine a scenario where Mizuhara had access to Ohtani’s finances, as interpreters are often tasked with off-the-field errands like picking up food or dry cleaning.

So what exactly do interpreters in Major League Baseball do on a daily basis? And how do you get the gig?…

Shortly after haggling his way out of free-agent purgatory and into a new contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Kiké Hernández asked his wife, Mariana, to investigate another market. She contacted former Dodger Rich Hill’s wife, Caitlin, with a request: Could the Hernándezes live in the Hills’ house again?

The Hills had bought the property, located in the Toluca Lake neighborhood, in 2017, soon after Rich signed a $48 million contract. The family decided not to sell it after Hill’s final season with the team in 2019. The house has since become a popular destination among Dodgers personnel. Catcher Austin Barnes lived there one season. Manager Dave Roberts has inquired about its availability. When Hernández rejoined the team at last year’s trade deadline, he moved into the house, which is a convenient 20-minute drive from Dodger Stadium, with access to three different highways.

“It’s very appealing, because of the location,” Hill said.

But that’s not its only selling point; almost as important is that the homeowner understands his tenants’ nomadic baseball lifestyle.

When searching for a place to live, players often rely upon each other’s recommendations, connections, and familiarity with baseball’s unique schedule and travel. That has led to a…

Shohei Ohtani has yet to debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but he already has a ring — a wedding ring.

The two-way superstar, who is notoriously private about his personal life, revealed the news on Instagram early Thursday morning. He said his wife is Japanese, but he didn’t provide her name or any details about his wedding.

“Not only have I began a new chapter in my career with the Dodgers but I also have began a new life with someone from my Native country of Japan who is very special to me and I wanted everyone to know I am now married,” Ohtani said. “I am excited for what is come and thank you for your support.”

Ohtani, whose statement is in Japanese, said he would share more information in an interview, according to the Associated Press.

The 29-year-old’s Instagram post featured a photo of his dog, Dekopin, whose American name is Decoy.

“We hope the two of us — and one animal — will work together,” Ohtani wrote, per the AP.

This isn’t the first time Ohtani has abruptly revealed major news on Instagram. In December, he announced on the social media platform that he signed with the Dodgers, ending feverish speculation about his landing spot in free agency. Ohtani’s agency, CAA, later said he agreed to a 10-year, $700 million contract with the club.
