Lorena Ochoa is a Mexican golfer with solid convictions. She has shown great temper during her golfing career and still has them.

A few weeks ago, she presented Xuntas, an organization promoting women’s golf. This is a relaunch of what was IGPM (Impulsando el Golf Profesional en México). This organization supports golf among women, helping players to gain quick access to professional golf just after they finish college.

Ochoa commented that Xuntas would focus on developing young girls to later encourage and guide them in a better way throughout their careers. Especially by helping them make the right decisions based on their personal objectives and goals.

At 41 years old, Lorena Ochoa continues to maintain a central position in the world of golf, even though she stopped competing 13 years ago. She clinched 27 victories on the LPGA Tour during her fantastic career, where she became world number one.

“From Xuntas, we are going to focus on new generations, with projects for 16 or 17-year-old girls to see their development in international tournaments and their needs. Also, to support those studying in universities to see if they want to dedicate themselves full-time to professionalism, taking the necessary steps and helping them mentally and developing strategies so that they only focus on their game”, Ochoa explained.

LPGA Tour salaries

Xuntas’ presentation allowed Ochoa to resurface a topic always present in professional golf. For some time, LPGA players have continued to highlight the enormous pay gap between their tour and the PGA Tour. For this reason, they do not give up an inch in their quest and continue to demand better prizes in each tournament.

“I have had the same position since I started playing, it is not fair, and we continue in the fight to get closer to them and equal opportunities. I got a bigger difference, and I congratulate the LPGA, which has done a great job increasing purses and improving the calendar. Golf is global, they are on the right track, but there is room for improvement,” Ochoa recently explained.

The Mexican recognized that the gap was more significant when she was an active competitor from 2003 to 2010. Since then, the prize pools have barely improved, but not by the amounts expected.
