Former Harvard women’s ice hockey coach Katey Stone sued the university for sex discrimination on Tuesday, alleging Harvard forced her to resign after reports of misconduct she said were false and that the university undervalues and underpays female coaches.

Stone, who retired in June 2023, announced the lawsuit in a news conference Tuesday afternoon alongside her legal team and former Harvard hockey players.

Stone coached at Harvard for 27 seasons but left her post amid an investigation into allegations of mistreatment of players, including insensitivity to mental health issues, downplaying injuries, leading derogatory chants directed at players and creating a climate where players were pitted against each other to curry favor with her. Multiple articles, including a March 2023 report in The Athletic, also reported hazing within her program. The Athletic detailed hazing and initiation rituals that involved forced alcohol consumption and sexualized skits and traditions, including an annual event that dates back decades called “naked skate.”

The lawsuit alleges that Harvard forced Stone out because of these misconduct allegations, which she called false, and described the school’s actions as “part and parcel of a larger culture at the University wherein female coaches…

With the advent of the transfer portal, it’d be fair to assume there are fewer opportunities for freshmen these days. And that might be true. But when I sat down to put together my list of the 10 freshmen I’m most excited to see play this season, the group quickly expanded to 15 … and then 20. Some of these players will have opportunities to impress because of the roster churn at their program and others are going to be good enough to leapfrog over older, more established players.

These 20 players — for a variety of reasons — are the 20 I’m most intrigued to see this season as they make the jump from high school (or international) ball to the NCAA.

1. JuJu Watkins

USC guard, 6-2
Sierra Canyon High School, Los Angeles

In working on this story, I talked with a bunch of college coaches. At first, my question was: “Which freshmen are going to have freshman all-American-type seasons?” I quickly needed to add: “Other than JuJu.” There seems to be a solid consensus that Watkins — the No. 1 player in the 2023 class — has the potential to live up to the hype, and many expect her to do just that. Coach Lindsay Gottlieb can, and should, give Watkins the keys to the car as they work to rebuild the Trojans into a West Coast (soon to be Big Ten?) powerhouse. Watkins will…

As the nation turns its attention to college basketball this weekend, fans will be watching what’s happening on the court. Lawyers and other interested parties will continue to track what’s happening off of it.

The NCAA’s business model is under attack from all sides, with multiple cases challenging the organization’s refusal to grant athletes employee status. And last week, two athletes took specific aim at one of college sports’ most recognizable and prestigious conferences.

Brown University basketball players Grace Kirk, who currently plays for the women’s basketball team, and Tamenang Choh, who played on the men’s basketball team until 2022, sued their university and the seven other Ivy League schools over their policy against offering athletic scholarships, alleging that it amounts to illegal price-fixing in violation of federal antitrust law.

It’s the newest intriguing challenge to the status quo. Here’s what you need to know.

What the case alleges

The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Connecticut by lawyers representing Kirk and Choh. The plaintiffs are seeking class-action certification on behalf of current and former Ivy League athletes dating back to March 7, 2019.

At issue is the fact that Ivy League athletes aren’t reimbursed in the form of…

Ten current college athletes have signed on to a public campaign advocating for a more equitable allocation of athletic department revenue. The athletes are asking for a share of the revenue their teams drive — split equally among all the athletes on the team — as well as the expansion of scholarships to cover six years, the protection of current NIL freedoms from Congressional involvement and the institution of scholarships for Ivy League athletes. Here’s what you need to know.

  • The effort is led by the National College Players Association, which has supported public campaigns in the past such as #NotNCAAProperty, in which athletes pushed for NIL rights and reform during March Madness in the spring of 2021.
  • This campaign is focused on restrictions that limit direct payment from schools and conferences to athletes, as well as potential Congressional involvement in NIL regulations that would add restrictions around what opportunities are permissible for athletes to pursue. The campaign will use the “FairRevShare” hashtag on social media.
  • Michigan basketball player Hunter Dickinson and Pitt basketball player Jamarius Burton will both wear a letter “S” for “Share” written on their hand when their teams play each other in Wednesday night’s men’s basketball…
