Nearly two years after she suffered a debilitating heart attack, Kim Pegula is still listed as a co-owner of the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres alongside her husband, Terry. The Pegulas used to own the Bills 50-50, but that is no longer the case.

Palm Beach County Circuit Civil Court documents show that on Feb. 13, 2023, Terry Pegula filed to have Kim ruled incapacitated and to be made her guardian. A panel of three court-appointed examiners recommended incapacitation, and on March 23, 2023, a judge named Terry the “plenary guardian of the person and property” of his wife.

The documents also show that many of Kim’s assets have been placed in a trust, with Terry and longtime petroleum business collaborator Bob Long listed as co-trustees.

“The court has determined that the ward lacks capacity to handle all of their affairs, and everything that can be delegated has been delegated to someone else,” said Stacy Beth Rubel, chairperson of the Florida Bar’s guardianship, power of attorney and advance directives committee.

“Kim is not coming back” to the Bills or Sabres front office, a longtime Pegula family associate briefed on her condition and prognosis said.

Three days after Kim became Terry’s ward, Laura Pegula, Terry’s daughter from his first marriage,…

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Buffalo Sabres have hit all the right notes when it comes to honoring individuals in the organization over the last few seasons. Rick Jeanneret got an epic sendoff in his final season in 2021-22. Last season, Ryan Miller’s jersey retirement was one of the most memorable nights of Buffalo’s season.

Prior to the Sabres’ game against the Boston Bruins on Tuesday, captain Kyle Okposo got his turn as the team honored him for appearing in his 1,000th NHL game. Okposo isn’t one to seek the spotlight, but he tried to soak in the last few days leading up to this game because he knew what it meant to his family. His wife, Danielle, and their four children were all on the ice before the game and featured in a pregame video. Okposo got choked up as he looked up at the videoboard.

“Tough to put into words what that video meant and just that my family was there to celebrate it with me was extremely special,” Okposo said.

Okposo, 35, has been a major part of the Sabres’ turnaround over the last few seasons. And that wasn’t always a guarantee. At one point during his career…

BUFFALO, N.Y. — When Kyle Okposo signed a one-year contract to return to the Buffalo Sabres, he did so with a serious belief that this team can contend for more than just a spot in the playoffs.

So as training camp approached, Okposo had an idea. Rather than wait for the beginning of the season to get the team-building process started, he wanted to start things early this year. He and his wife organized a team trip down to the Buffalo Bills’ Week 1 game against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.

“I wanted to get us together so that when we hit the ground running in camp there wasn’t a bonding process that needed to happen,” Okposo said. “When we hit camp, it’s full go. The last few years have been about building bonds, setting a foundation and finding our identity throughout the season.”

Okposo said the Sabres sent a group of 34 people that included almost every member of the team along with some of the wives and girlfriends. Everybody found their own way to New York and stayed at the same place. Okposo bought the tickets and he and his wife, Danielle, found a company to set everything up for the team tailgate before the game.

“The connection between our two organizations from a player level is something I’d like to enhance and grow,” Okposo said.

Okposo…

Sabres defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin will not participate in the team’s pregame skate ahead of its Pride night matchup with the Canadiens on Monday. The rest of Buffalo’s players will be wearing Pride jerseys, the Sabres said. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Lyubushkin cited fears about Russian law and what it would mean when he goes home to Russia in his decision. The 28-year-old was born in Russia and started his career there. He returns home to his wife and children in the offseason.
  • On Friday, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told The Athletic that the league does not have any information to suggest that Russian players are facing “material” threats, in Russia or elsewhere, if they choose to participate in Pride night activities.
  • Buffalo said in a statement that it “feels strongly that one way to garner support (for the LGBTQIA+ community) is through wearing Pride jerseys and using Pride tape in warmups.” The Sabres added: “That said, we are aware of the general threats to certain players and understand their decision to forego risk.”

Backstory

Teams’ concern for Russian player safety has arisen since Russia’s anti-gay laws were amended in early December. Per The New York…

Buffalo Bills fans are steaming.

Should Buffalo Sabres fans be dreaming?

We address all your deepest concerns and best questions in The Satchel.

Maybe I’ve watched too much “Succession,” but was Jessie Pegula’s article an attempt to position herself within the family? Perhaps they agreed she was the right person to speak on behalf of everyone, but the lack of a joint statement seems … odd. Lines like “My mom always wanted me to be involved; she wanted me to learn and eventually do what she was doing,” and her admission about the thought of leaving tennis to work for the family strike me as planting a flag? I can’t help but think about the ownership struggle for the Broncos between the Bowlen family and ensuing litigation. — Matthew R.

First, I find it encouraging the Pegula family finally felt comfortable enough to provide insight about Kim Pegula’s health, from her harrowing cardiac arrest, daughter Kelly’s life-saving involvement and a long recovery that seems to be impressing caregivers.

The timing of Jessica Pegula’s essay wasn’t coincidental. Terry Pegula will attend Super Bowl festivities this week and will be inundated with questions about his wife. As was the case at Wimbledon, where Jessica would need to participate in news conferences, a family…

Before the hockey world descended on Sunrise, Fla., for NHL All-Star Weekend, players used the weeks leading up to celebrate women in sports, local high schools and apparently their deep-seated love for plaid suits. Fashion traditions were turned on their heads, while vintage looks from a decade ago were brought back to life.

Players having great seasons ahead of the season’s halfway mark reminded everyone that you can wear what you want, shamelessly, when you’re performing on the ice. Additionally, one star re-emerged with a dazzling blue suit and made a case for being the best-dressed player in the game. He had some incredible competition from two different teams who used their platforms to highlight those in their respective community.

Which athletes made a lasting impression before the All-Stars converged on the Sunshine State?

Wow, that scarf in the first photo is taking me all the way back to middle school and early high school in the late 2000s and early 2010s. This is a serious (and funny) flashback to what was stylish during my teenage years. Of the two looks, I’ll admit that, nostalgia aside, I prefer the all-brown suit and turtleneck ensemble by the Calgary Flames
