Brittney Griner

Ladies, gentlemen, and basketball enthusiasts, buckle up because we have some fabulous news! The one and only Brittney Griner has made a triumphant return to the WNBA court after nearly a year of detainment in Russia. And, she’s here to make an incredible comeback!

Brittney’s Time in Russia

Griner, like many other WNBA stars, had been playing basketball in Russia during the offseason. However, her journey took an unexpected turn when she was arrested in February 2022. It all happened when two cannabis vape cartridges were discovered in her carry-on luggage.

Although Griner claimed that packing those cartridges was a mere oversight, she found herself facing drug smuggling charges. After returning to the US through a prisoner swap, she made her return to the US!

After 572 days off the court, Brittney made her return to the court, and while she states that she feels she needs to “knock off some cobwebs” before reaching the level of play that made her a seven-time WNBA all-star, the crowd at her first WNBA game went wild.

Brittney’s First Game in 10 Months

In the Phoenix Mercury’s preseason finale, Griner, the fierce and unstoppable force, graced us with her presence. She played a solid 17 minutes, showing everyone that she hasn’t lost her touch. With her signature moves and dominating presence, she effortlessly scored 10 points, reminding us why she’s a legend in her own right.

Now, we know what you’re thinking. This was just a preseason game, a warmup for the upcoming season. But let me tell you, the gravity of the situation is not lost on Griner. Every minute on that court mattered. Every point she scored was a statement. She showed the world that she’s back and ready to reclaim her rightful place among the elite.

We can only imagine the emotions coursing through Griner’s veins as she stepped onto the court. The anticipation, the excitement, and maybe even a hint of nervousness. After all, she had been away for so long. But once that ball was in her hands, she proved that she’s a force to be reckoned with, no matter the circumstances.

Griner’s return not only brings joy to the fans but also adds a new layer of excitement to the upcoming WNBA season. Her presence alone elevates the competition and raises the stakes for all the teams in the league. You better believe they’ll be strategizing and game-planning to contain her unstoppable force.

So, let’s celebrate this extraordinary moment. Brittney Griner is back, and she’s ready to conquer the court once again. The stage is set for an exhilarating season filled with breathtaking plays and awe-inspiring moments. Get your popcorn ready, because this is going to be a wild ride.

As we bid adieu to Griner’s almost 10-month detainment in Russia, let’s welcome her back with open arms. The WNBA court is her domain, and she’s here to remind us all why she’s a true basketball icon. The journey ahead promises excitement, passion, and, most importantly, the brilliance of Brittney Griner.

It’s that time of year again when the fashion elite gather for the Met Gala. This year’s theme is “A Line of Beauty” in honour of the late Karl Lagerfeld. And, it was a night filled with glamour and artistry as designers and celebrities alike pay homage to Lagerfeld’s legacy.

Speaking of icons, some notable female athletes were in attendance this year. Most notably, Brittney Griner, Eileen Gu, and Serena Williams, each with their partners of course. These women are trailblazers in their respective sports, breaking barriers, and shattering stereotypes. Seeing them on the Met Gala carpet is a testament to the increasing recognition of women’s sports and the impact these athletes have on society.

Brittney Griner

Brittney Griner, perhaps the most controversial and newsworthy female athlete attended with her partner Cherelle Griner. The 6’9″ basketball superstar is known for her incredible athleticism, fierce determination, and of course her Russian prison time. Brittney made her Met Gala debut just five months after her prison release. Here she can be seen dressed in a custom coordinating Calvin Klein suit. Very neutral and clean, but would Karl Lagerfeld approve? We’ll never know.

Eileen Gu

Eileen Gu, an American born freestyle skier, has made her way as both an Olympic gold medalist and an IMG model. An unlikely combo, but one certainly worthy of an invite to the Met Gala. Eileen was a guest of IWC Watches, and wore a gown by Robert Wun. The dress was designed with red splashes all over to look like spilled wine. Perhaps a more fitting choice for the after party.

Serena Williams

Serena Williams, Met Gala 2023

Last but certainly not least, Serena Williams and her beau Alexis Ohanian. Serena needs no introduction, with 23 Grand Slam titles and an unparalleled legacy in Tennis. The Tennis star is also known to be a total fashionista, so it comes as no surprise that she couldn’t pass up an opportunity to attend the Met Gala. Not only that, she used the world stage of the Met Gala to debut her pregnancy with her second child! Serena stunned in a gorgeous Gucci gown, adorn in pearls, Karl would approve. Now that’s one way to announce a pregnancy!

The presence of female athletes at the Met Gala sends a powerful message: women’s sports deserve to be celebrated on the same stage as fashion and entertainment. It’s a reminder that beauty comes in many forms, and that athleticism and grace are just as captivating as a designer gown. And on this night, we see a glimpse of who these athletes are beyond the court or field.

So here’s to the Met Gala and all the beauty it represents. May we continue to celebrate and uplift the incredible women in sports, and may they inspire us to be our best selves both on and off the field. As Lagerfeld once said, “Fashion is a language that creates itself in clothes to interpret reality.” And the reality is, women’s sports deserve to be recognized and celebrated on the grandest of stages.

The WNBA has been in the headlines lately, but not for the reasons players, fans, and the league would have hoped. The ongoing battle for private flights has come to a head, as players fight for better travel conditions and their own safety. The COVID-19 pandemic has made matters worse, with players expressing concerns over the risk of flying commercially. The WNBA and its players are taking the matter into their own hands, with players like Breanna Stewart and Brittney Griner at the forefront of the fight.

Breanna Stewart, a two-time WNBA champion, is joining the New York Liberty, and she is using her platform to boost the conversation. On social media, she wrote, “I would love to be part of a deal that helps subsidize charter travel for the entire WNBA. I would contribute my NIL, posts + production hours to ensure we all travel in a way that prioritizes player health + safety, which ultimately results in a better product. Who’s with me?” Her post was met with overwhelming support, as players and fans rallied behind her. Even NBA players like Ja Morant and Kyrie Irving have offered their support, with the latter saying, “We gotta get something done, and I’m with them no matter how much it costs.”

Brittney Griner’s recent return from a 10-month detainment in Russia has brought attention to the league’s travel policies. As a free agent, Griner’s eventual return to the WNBA raises concerns about her safety in commercial flights. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has said that the league is working with security experts to find the right solution for Griner’s situation, but players and fans are calling for a change to the rule for everyone.

The cost of charter flights is a major barrier, with Commissioner Engelbert estimating that it would be over $25 million per year to fund charter flights for an entire WNBA season. The league has already asked major airlines and charter companies for assistance, but it’s not something the league can do without sponsors stepping up. Commissioner Engelbert has said that the league would need a commitment in perpetuity from a sponsor, and the calls for support are growing louder.

The fight for private flights is just one of the many battles the WNBA is facing, but players and fans are hopeful that the conversation will lead to change. Four-time WNBA champion Sue Bird has said that “the best part about it is people are talking about it…that right there, in my experience, is how change starts and hopefully it’s the beginning of us getting those charter flights.” The WNBA has come a long way since its inception, but players and fans hope that the league will continue to evolve and improve, starting with better travel conditions.

Brittney Griner on the plane that brought her back to the U.S. FSB/TASS photo.

When Brittney Griner was freed from Russian captivity three days ago, the basketball world rejoiced.

The U.S. government traded the WNBA star for convicted arms dealer Viktor Bout in a prisoner swap that concluded months of tedious talks between the two countries. Griner, convicted in August of possessing a small amount of hashish oil and a vape cartridge, had been sentenced to serve almost a decade in a Russian penal colony.

But though the trade was hailed in sports circles as a victory, others decried it. President Joe Biden was ridiculed as making the U.S. look “weak” by taking Griner, and he was criticized for not holding out for American hostage Paul Whelan to also be included in the deal.

Many of the critics were legislators, who also took aim at Griner’s identity: a Black, queer woman who had joined her Phoenix Mercury teammates in not being in the arena during the national anthem, beginning after the 2020 murder of George Floyd in Minnesota.

And though the rhetoric itself is unfortunate, the fact that there was blow back in Griner’s case is ultimately an encouraging sign.

Let’s first acknowledge how monumental the trade was for the Olympian and All-Star: this was the first time a woman…
