The Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) women’s tennis team continued their winning streak with a 5-2 victory against Tennessee State (TSU) on Saturday at the Greg Adams Tennis Center. This win marks the Colonels’ third consecutive victory, improving their overall record to 4-6.

The day started with doubles matches, and the Colonels got off to a hot start by winning two out of three matches. Masha Fedenko and Daniela Hernandez paired up to defeat TSU’s Warona Mdlulwa and Jovana Nikolic 6-4, while Elena Tairian and Madison Hill won their match against A. Arrieta Castillo and Daniela Koleva 6-2. TSU’s Naomi Von Bose and Franka Sindicic managed to secure a win against EKU’s Emmeline Polevoi and Mariia Triska 6-4, but the Colonels’ victories in the No. 1 and No. 3 courts gave them the doubles point.

In singles play, the Colonels’ dominance continued. Fedenko, playing in the No. 1 spot, won her match against Mdlulwa 6-0, 6-4, while Polevoi defeated Von Bose 6-3, 6-3 from the No. 2 position. Tairian’s opponent, Jovana Nikolic, retired early in the match, giving Tairian the win at No. 3. The most exciting match of the day was from the No. 4 spot, as Hernandez came back from a 4-0 deficit in the final set to win 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 against Koleva. TSU’s Arrieta Castillo managed to secure a win against Hill 6-2, 7-6 (7-2), while Sindicic defeated Triska 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 10-4 in the No. 6 spot.

Overall, it was a solid performance by the EKU women’s tennis team, who extended their winning streak to three matches. Head coach Rob Oertel praised his team’s efforts, saying “I’m proud of the way our team competed today. We’re starting to put things together and it’s exciting to see the progress we’re making.”

The Colonels’ next challenge will be against a tough opponent, Lipscomb University, on March 4th. Lipscomb currently has an overall record of 4-2 and is coming off a 4-3 win against Austin Peay. The EKU women’s tennis team will have their work cut out for them, but if they continue to play with the same level of intensity and focus, they may be able to extend their winning streak even further.

Last week was a dramatic one in the world of tennis, as the 2023 Australian Open took center stage in Melbourne. One of the standout moments of the tournament was the emotional performance of young American sensation Coco Gauff, who faced a tough defeat in the fourth round.

Gauff, who was the seventh seed in Melbourne, was faced with Latvian Jelena Ostapenko on Margaret Court Arena, and despite putting up a valiant effort, was defeated 7-5, 6-3 in straight sets. The 18-year-old broke down in tears during her post-match press conference, expressing her disappointment and frustration over the result.

Gauff, who had been showing great form and promise earlier in the season, having won the ASB Classic in Auckland, was unable to overcome Ostapenko’s solid performance, who saved seven of the eight break points she faced and capitalized on all three of her opportunities on Gauff’s serve. Despite the loss, Gauff was optimistic and professional in her post-match comments, acknowledging that sometimes, you just have to give credit to your opponent who played better on the day.

Meanwhile, fellow American Jessica Pegula continued to progress in the tournament, securing her spot in the quarterfinals after a strong 7-5, 6-2 victory over Czech Barbora Krejcikova. Pegula, who was seeded third in the tournament, became the highest-ranked player left in the women’s draw, giving American fans plenty of reason to cheer.

However, the biggest shock of the tournament came when women’s world number one Iga Światek was defeated by Elena Rybakina, who reached the quarterfinals for the first time in Melbourne Park. Światek, who was the tournament favorite after reaching the semifinals last year and winning eight titles in 2022, including two grand slams, was beaten 6-4, 6-4 on Rod Laver Arena.

In her post-match comments, Światek spoke about feeling the pressure and how she felt that she “didn’t want to lose” instead of “wanting to win.” The young Polish star acknowledged that this was something she needed to focus on in the coming weeks and months.

The 2023 Australian Open was a tournament filled with thrilling matches, stunning upsets, and memorable moments. The players will now move on to their next challenges, but the memories of this year’s tournament in Melbourne will linger for a long time to come.

Spoiler alert, you won’t be seeing Serena Williams in a catsuit. Though we’re sure she’s at home watching, wearing something of the like. The beauty of the Australian Open is the lack of restrictions on player apparel, a welcome change from that of the Wimbledon White. So, what’s trending at the Australian Open in women’s tennis apparel?

1. Nike’s Melbourne Collection

Aryna Sabalenka wasn’t the only one sporting Nike’s latest Melbourne Collection. The theme for the Australian Open? Hues of blue, purple, and pink coupled with abstract patterns. The Spring Slam Dress features a racer front design and a mini-printed skirt. Though this style isn’t particularly unique in design, the colours echo that of the playfulness and resort style typically associated with Australia. What’s better? This look pairs almost intentionally with the court.

As far as looks go, this one deserves a Grand Slam. Emma Raducanu, wearing the purple pleated Nike Spring Slam Skirt paired with its coordinating Spring Slam Tank. The best part? The tennis shoes of course. The Nike Zoom Vapor 11 sneakers in fuchsia pair perfectly with this ensemble. It’s no wonder these beauties are on backorder.

2. Joma’s Seafoam Blue

Despite being sponsored by Joma and not Nike, it appears that Magda Linette understood the assignment. Sporting a seafoam blue Joma dress with a coordinating visor. This look is classic and preppy, nodding to the pre-Serena Williams era of tennis apparel. Although this look doesn’t appear to be off-the-rack, I did manage to find some Joma pieces that will give you the Madga look (skirt, top, and tennis trainers).

3. Fila’s Alley Collection

Was it cruel of me to put Karolina Pliskova last, after Magda Linette? Maybe. Karolina can be seen sporting Fila’s latest release, the Alley Collection, which dropped just ahead of the Australian Open. This collection echoes that of both Nike and Joma, including shades of blue, purple, and pink. Even better? This entire look is available for purchase. Karolina can be seen wearing the Alley Pleated Skort paired with its coordinating Alley Printed Racerback Tank.

I couldn’t help but give Karolina Pliskova’s tennis shoes their own moment. The Fila Axilus 2 Energized, they’re bright and yet the coordinating tread makes them the perfect match to her entire ensemble.

The Takeaway

The top trends for women’s tennis apparel at the 2023 Australian Open include hues of blue, purple, and pink, abstract patterns, and pleated skirts.

As an avid women’s Tennis fan, I feel that something is missing in fashion for this year’s Australian Open. Could it be the custom Nike looks that we’ve become accustomed to seeing on the likes of Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, and Maria Sharapova? While I love that the off-the-rack options allow us to shop the looks of our favourite Tennis players, I feel that the custom looks provide a greater opportunity for self-expression. With so many eyes on the Australian Open, why not use it as an opportunity to share your personality and creativity with your fans?
