A scientific study published in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research shows how cycling can help with your running. The study demonstrates that high intensity cycling can enable runners to increase their training volume without the accompanying risk of injury. This is key for running beginners who don’t have the training history to increase their running mileage without risking injury. This evidence can also help older generations of runners who are looking to limit injury risk. Elite runners who have reached their peak in running volume could also benefit from cycling for running.
The study looking at cycling for running
The study focused on the work-to-rest ratio during cycling-based high-intensity training (HIT). The researchers felt it could be important in regulating physiological and performance adaptations. As part of the study, the researchers sought to determine the effectiveness of cycling-based HIT with different work-to-rest ratios for long distance runners.
They assessed 32 long-distance runners, both male and female. The runners had an average weekly training volume of 25 miles. The runners underwent baseline testing of a 3km time trial run. They were then split into three groups and did cycling HIT of 6 x 10 second sprints with different rest…
