Cold air can irritate the lungs making it harder to breathe steadily. Our muscles also become more constricted meaning we have to do a more thorough warm-up each time we head out. Before we explain how menthol can help you when running in the cold, let’s take a dip into the science. When it’s cold, warm blood from our core loses its heat when it passes near the skin. This is why your extremities and your skin feel extra cold when running in winter. One way to reduce this effect is by restricting the blood vessels at the skin’s surface to help retain heat.
