Still recuperating Rafael Nadal withdraws ahead of Monte Carlo Masters

Rafael Nadal will not play the 2023 Monte Carlo Masters. The Spaniard posted on Twitter on Tuesday, 4th April that he was yet recovering from the injury to his left hip. In his Twitter post, Nadal said, “Hello everyone, I am still not ready to compete at the highest level.

I won’t be able to play in one of the most important tournaments of my career, Monte Carlo. I’m still not in the condition to play with maximum guarantees and I continue my preparation process, hoping to return soon”.

The injury-ridden trajectory of Rafael Nadal’s 2023

The 36-year-old hasn’t played this season since he lost to Mackenzie McDonald in the second round of the Australian Open at the start of the year. He injured his hip in that match which he lost in straight sets to the American.

Following that loss, after visiting his doctor, Nadal shared that he was ruled out of action on the tour for six-to-eight weeks. Consequentially, he also missed the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and the Miami Open in March.

Nadal’s absence on the tour also meant that his rankings plummeted. He exited the top-10 of the ATP singles rankings for the first time since he entered it in 2005. The 23-time Grand Slam champion’s currently ranked 14th in the world.
