Spurs v Arsenal and Everton v Liverpool – what do WSL derbies look like in 2023?

It took only five minutes for Arsenal to lead in Saturday’s north London derby and with that went Tottenham Hotspur fans’ hopes of causing an upset in the Women’s Super League.

Arsenal supporters made up the majority of the crowd at Brisbane Road and they were the loudest for most of the game. Stina Blackstenius’s early goal only enhanced the dominance on the pitch and in the stands.

The derby was one of two in the WSL this weekend. Friday night’s Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool was the opener to Women’s Football Weekend: the Football Association’s annual celebration of the women’s game. It’s a similar concept to Non-League Day, which is also happening this weekend.

Both matches were given special treatment on Sky Sports and had their own PR moment in the week, with the Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool and Brent Cross shopping centre in north London being lit up with projections to promote the games.
