The head coach of Spain’s women’s national team Jorge Vilda has criticised the “improper behaviour” of RFEF president Luis Rubiales after their World Cup win but has said he is staying on.
Eleven members of the team’s coaching staff have resigned following the actions of Rubiales’ towards Jenni Hermoso.
Assistant managers Montse Tome, Javier Lerga and Eugenio Gonzalo Martin, physio Blanca Romero Moraleda, goalkeeping coach Carlos Sanchez and six youth team coaches have all stepped down from their roles.
The coaching staff announced their resignation in a collective statement, citing the “unacceptable attitudes and actions of the RFEF chief.”
Rubiales was provisionally suspended for 90-days from all football-related activities by FIFA on Saturday. Later in the day Vilda released a statement saying: “I am truly sorry that the victory of Spanish women’s football has been damaged by the improper behaviour of our chief until now Luis Rubiales, which he himself has recognised.
“There is no doubt it is unacceptable and does not at all reflect the principles and values that I defend in my life, in sport in general, and in football in particular. I condemn completely any sexist attitude, which is far from an advanced and developed society.
