Spain is a World Cup champion for the first time in the history of the women’s program. From failing to qualify for the 2015 World Cup in Canada to sweeping a recent run of youth tournaments, the country’s build has been swift.

Defender Olga Carmona scored the match’s lone goal, hitting a one-timer into the lower right corner past England goalkeeper Mary Earps — who had some highlight saves herself, including a penalty stop on Jenni Hermoso in the second half.

Soon to be teammates at FC Barcelona, Ona Batlle and Lucy Bronze shared a sweet moment at the end of the game.

I remember looking at the field and seeing England captain Millie Bright knelt on the field crying and looking at the Spain’s players celebrating their win. Pure heartbreak.

One fan asked Aitana Bonmatí for her sock and she didn’t hesitate to give them away. I was seated on the field and she looked at me while I was capturing this unique moment.
