Son of 12-time National Coach of the Year predicted to replace Texas A&M’s Buzz Williams

The coaching carousel is back in full swing for college basketball, even though it seemed like things had settled down when programs like Virginia, Iowa, Indiana, and others hired their future head coaches. However, Maryland’s Kevin Willard threw a curveball during his press conference before his team played in the NCAA Tournament, publicly criticizing his administration.

Willard then made it clear that he hadn’t been in contact with other teams, and that his agent was handling those conversations.

“I don’t know what I’m doing,” Willard said. “I haven’t talked to my agent, my wife. I made a promise to this team. Just focus on this team, and that’s what I’ve done. I haven’t talked to anyone. I have an agent; I’m sure he’s talking to people. That’s what agents like to do.”

Willard ultimately left for Maryland, forcing the administration to act quickly in finding a new head coach. Just over 48 hours later, the Terrapins hired Buzz Williams, the head coach of the Texas A&M Aggies. Williams had been eyeing the job from the start, even before Willard confirmed his departure.

“His success is undeniable, but so is his infectious energy and dedication to developing young men,” Colleen Sorem said.
