Small wins big in Argentina – More Sport – The Women’s Game

The 17-year-old ran in a commanding time of 2:04.76 in front of a packed stadium to win Australia’s fourth gold of the Games.

The race format saw a two-stage competition, with the gold medal going to the quickest time over the two races. 

“I’m absolutely stoked to get here and get the gold,” Small told olympics.com.au.

“It hasn’t sunk in quite yet. This whole experience has been amazing, to be announced flagbearer and now see the Australian flag raised from on top of the podium with a gold medal – I’m so stoked,” she said.

At the Commonwealth Games in April, Small became the fastest ever Australian junior over 800m, setting a new U20 record of 2·00 81. 

Australian teammate Sophie White won silver in the 100m hurdles. The Perth local was able to run a personal best of 13.01 in windy conditions and finish behind America’s Grace Stark.

“That felt great, it was a great race to be a part of,” White said.
