Rennae Stubbs was left in disbelief over Daniil Medvedev’s Laver Cup outburst as the former five-time Grand Slam winner in doubles thinks it is time for the ATP and WTA to introduce “a blanket rule” that would see every racket hit that leaves the court area result in an automatic disqualification.
After getting upset by Frances Tiafoe from a set up in his first-ever Laver Cup match, the Russian tennis star didn’t impress either in his following match. On the final day of the event, the former world No. 1 was in a real close first-set battle against Ben Shelton when he lost a point that put the American 6-4 up in the first-set tie-break.
And Medvedev didn’t take it well at all, raising his racket and angrily throwing it toward the stands in Berlin. Fortunately, it didn’t hit anyone but it instantly drew boos from the spectators and the rising American raised his hands in an attempt to draw attention to what had just happened.
From the Team World bench, Tiafoe stood up and pushed for a default but nothing happened because the chair umpire argued that the incident went without any physical harm.
