The WNBA’s Chicago Sky are expected to announce some changes to their ownership group Friday, according to a report Thursday in the Chicago Sun-Times.
The Sky, who began play in the WNBA as an expansion franchise in 2006, are principally owned by Michael Alter, a Chicago native and president of the Alter Group, a real-estate development firm.
The Sky won the 2021 WNBA championship and currently are in the midst of a free-agency period in which stars Candace Parker and Courtney Vandersloot are unrestricted free agents who have been considering moves to other teams.
Alter previously this year expressed his continued support for the Sky, according to the Sun-Times. It’s unknown whether he will bring on other investors or might be considering a sale of his stake in the team.
The Sky have three other unrestricted free agents: Allie Quigley, who is Vandersloot’s wife; Emma Meesseman, who was the 2019 WNBA Finals MVP while with the Washington Mystics; and Azura Stevens.
WNBA free agents can officially sign starting Feb. 1.
