Simone Biles and Suni Lee clinched automatic places on the U.S. Olympic women’s gymnastics team for next month’s Tokyo Olympics by finishing in the top two places in the trials, which concluded on Sunday in St. Louis.
Jordan Chiles and Grace McCallum were chosen by a committee to fill out the four-member team that will attempt to win another gold medal in the team competition. The United States won gold in 2012 and 2016.
MyKayla Skinner and Jade Carey will take the fifth and sixth spots on the team to compete in individual competitions. Kayla DiCello, Kara Eaker, Leanne Wong and Emma Malabuyo will travel to Tokyo as alternates.
With a score of 118.098, Biles finished first all-around over two nights of competition in St. Louis. Lee, who will attend her first Olympic Games, starred on Sunday, finishing with a higher score (58.166) than Biles (57.533) on the second night.
Over the two nights, Lee recorded the highest scores on uneven bars and balance beam, while Biles was best on the vault and floor exercise.
Biles won four gold medals (team, all-around, vault and floor) and one bronze (beam) at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
