Former world No. 1 Simona Halep has just announced some big news as the two-time Grand Slam champion is set to play her first post-doping suspension tournament in Miami after being awarded a main draw wildcard into the tournament.
On Tuesday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced that Halep’s doping ban appeal was successful and that the 32-year-old’s four-year doping ban was reduced to nine months. Since Halep had been suspended since 2022 October, that news meant that she was immediately allowed to return to tennis.
Two days later, Halep confirmed her first tournament since clearing her name as she is set to compete at a WTA 1000 tournament in Miami, which starts on March 19th.
“I’m thrilled to let you all know that I will be making my return to the WTA Tour in two weeks at the @miamiopen! Thank you to the tournament for giving me this opportunity and I cannot wait to be back on court and competing. See you all soon!” Halep announced on Instagram.
Halep had a few deep runs in Miami
When Halep kicks off her Miami campaign in less than two weeks, she will be making her first appearance since the 2022 US Open. Also, it will be Halep’s 10th appearance in Miami.
