Saudi Arabia will host the 2023 edition of the Club World Cup.
FIFA has announced that the gulf nation will host the tournament, which involves the winners of the continental club competitions in the previous season across the globe. The decision was agreed by all of the associations around the world.
The last edition was won by Real Madrid on Saturday.
The 2023 competition will take place between December 12 and December 22, 2023.
Saudi Arabia has been criticised by Amnesty International for limiting the rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly. Courts have also regularly handed out the death penalty for a wide range of crimes.
Migrant workers, according to Amnesty, are left vulnerable to abuse in the nation and exploitation.
Within Saudi Arabia, homosexuality and being transgender are seen as immoral activities. Homosexual acts can be punished with capital punishment, life imprisonment, fines, deportation, flogging and chemical castration. LGBTQ+ people generally face significant repression.
Women also face discrimination in the nation.
Reports have previously suggested Saudi Arabia will try to bid for the 2030 World Cup. They have previously hosted the 1997 Confederations Cup, and the 1992 and 1995 Intercontinental Championship for the King Fahd Cup.
